Hydro Dramatics Completes Unique Water Features at The Legends at Sparks Marina in Nevada
Hydro Dramatics, a St. Louis-based fountain consulting firm, has completed signature water features at The Legends at Sparks Marina, a $1.1 billion, two-million-square-foot destination, entertainment and retail complex located in Sparks, Nev. Utilizing the latest fountain technology, Hydro Dramatics created varied fountains, pools and water effects as integral parts of The Legends’ aesthetic environment. Kansas City, Mo.-based RED Development LLC is the project’s developer. Ochsner Hare & Hare, also of Kansas City, is the landscape architect.
“For this project, the elements became the main features that attract people to the spaces,” says Korey Schulz, senior project manager, Ochsner Hare & Hare. “In each corridor and plaza space, water is the focal point. The water movement, interactivity, noise and aesthetics all make the water features an element that invite patrons to sit and enjoy the spaces after a day of shopping and entertainment at the center.”
The Legends’ new Pony Express Fountain—a tribute to America’s 1,900-mile relay mail delivery system in the 1860s—features a bronze sculpture of a Pony Express rider on horseback. To add to the drama of the fountain, Hydro Dramatics installed a pre-programmed effect that emits fog at different times throughout the day and night.
Other unique water features at the site include a Fish Fountain, which features large sculptures of fish that are suspended above five separate pools. A carefully choreographed and pre-programmed LED light and water spray show creates a dramatic effect; a Boulder Fountain boasts five large linear boulders that are supported by piers and suspended above a pool. The boulders were core drilled to allow water to flow from the top and spill onto the rocks below; a tranquil Wall Fountain features The Legends’ logo; and the Tower Plaza Fountain, The Legends’ signature water feature, which is comprised of nine pools and a dramatic waterfall lit by LED lighting.
Throughout its grand opening weekend in June, more than 100,000 people visited the complex. “The Legends at Sparks Marina is expected to become one of the area’s major draws,” says Paul Kaus, fountain consultant, Hydro Dramatics. “We wanted to create memorable water features that reflect that vitality.”
